Installing Windows 10 from a Downloaded ISO with Rufus
If you’ve downloaded the Windows 10 installation media file from Microsoft, now it’s time to install the operating system on your computer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process using Rufus.
Step 1: Open Rufus
To use Rufus for installing Windows 10, you need to have the Rufus software installed on your computer. You can download Rufus from its official website. Once downloaded and installed, launch Rufus by double-clicking on it.
Step 2: Choose the USB Drive
Select a USB drive as the installation media device in Rufus. This will be the drive where you’ll install Windows 10. Make sure to choose a drive with sufficient free space (at least 128 GB) since your old hard drive will be partitioned and re-partitioned after the installation.
Step 3: Select the Language and Language Locale
In Rufus, select the language for the installation from the dropdown menu at the top. Choose the desired language and locale. This setting determines how Windows 10 is displayed to users once installed.
Step 4: Click on the Boot Options
Once you’ve selected your preferred language and locale, click on the “Boot Options” button at the bottom of the screen.
Option A – Automatic Mount as a Drive (Recommended)
This option will mount the USB drive in a new partition on your computer. This is recommended for beginners as it makes the installation process simpler.
– Select the USB drive you downloaded earlier.
– Choose how much space to allocate for Windows 10’s system, user, and data partitions (recommended: 256 GB).
– Set the start time for Windows 10 (optional but useful if you want to install early).
– Click “Start” to begin the installation.
Option B – Mount as a Drive at Boot Time
If you prefer not to use Rufus or want more control over your settings, choose this option.
– Select the USB drive you downloaded earlier.
– Choose whether to mount it at boot time or when running an autorun (optional).
Step 5: Wait for the Installation to Complete
After selecting your options, click “Start” in Rufus to begin the installation process. Windows 10 will now download and install on your computer.
Steps to Install Windows 10:
- Step 6: During the installation, a progress bar will appear, which shows the amount of space being used by the installation media.
- When the installation is complete, you’ll receive an “Install Now” button at the bottom of the screen.
- Click on this button to start the installation process.
Option C – No Disk Space and Format
If your USB drive doesn’t have enough free space for Windows 10 (which should be around 128 GB), you might be prompted to insert another blank disk or choose “Install with the media size that matches the available space.” Select this option, then proceed with the installation process.
- Step D: During the installation, Windows 10 will configure your computer’s system and other components.
- When completed, restart your computer and enter your product key to activate Windows 10.
Troubleshooting Tips:
– Make sure the USB drive is inserted into a working port on your computer.
– Ensure that Rufus is installed in the recommended directory (usually C:\Program Files\Windows Kits\10 or C:\Windows).
– Check for any issues during installation by monitoring the progress bar and disk usage.
